Chuck Klosterman gibt sich in seinem eigentlichen Erstlingswerk richtig Mühe Heavy Metal nicht nur zu erklären, sondern das Gesicht, dieser laut Klosterman, nach dem Frauenkleid-Auftritt Kurt Cobains, ausgestorbenen Musikrichtung, zu wahren. Im Prinzip schildert Chuck seine Erfahrung mit dem Heavy Metal und die dazu passende amerikanische Musikszene von seiner Kindheit bis zu seiner Studienzeit. Dabei redet er nur allzu gern über die Einöde North Dakotas, wo er aufwuchs und die er stetig zu verteidigen versucht, um irgendwie den Stellenwert dieser Gegend zu heben. Das schafft er nicht zuletzt durch Schlussvollgerungen, in denen er referiert, dass die Leute dort nicht dumm seien, sondern nur keine Zeit haben, neben ihrer Arbeit über die wirklich wichtigen Dinge im Leben nachzudenken.

Im Gegensatz zu seinem, hier zuerst erschienen Zweitlingswerk, kann man den seitenlangen Erklärungen gut folgen, auch als Nicht-Metal-Fan. Wie man es von dem Musikjournalisten gewohnt ist, benutzt Chuck als literarisches Mittel Vergleiche, wie zum Beispiel, seine Schlussfolgerung, dass Mötley Crue seine Beatles sind. Und irgendwie schafft er es nicht nur den Leser zum Lachen zu bringen, sondern auch Heavy Metal wie richtig gute Musik erscheinen zu lassen. Wer jedoch glaubt, dass Klosterman ausschließlich sachlich bleibt, sollte sich auf Sätze wie „…versuchte den Mikroständer zu bumsen und wie Tarzan brüllte…“(S.28) gefasst machen, die immer wieder die Eigenart des Metal als Schmunzelfaktor nutzen.

Richtig gut ist das Leseerlebnis allerdings erst dann, wenn man sich die Mühe macht, die angesprochenen Songs nebenher anzuspielen. Leider gibt es auch zwei große Nachteile in diesem amüsanten Buch. Zum einen vergisst man bei all den Bands oft was auf der Seite vorher stand und zum anderen lassen die vielen Rechtschreiberfehler den Leser oft vor eine Wand laufen, da sie morphologisch richtig, semantisch jedoch gänzlich falsch sind.

Was das Layout angeht, kann man den allseits beliebten Songtext „…don´t judge a book by ist cover…“ nicht ernst nehmen, denn eine Kuh mit typischer KISS-Befleckung gibt vorab genau den Ton an, den dieses Buch anschlägt. Ernsthaftigkeit und aufs Korn nehmen seiner Lieblingsmusik, das kann dieser Mann vereinen.

 

Mein Fazit ist, dass persönliche Storys im Gegensatz zu seinem Roman „Eine zu 85% wahre Geschichte“ kaum vorhanden sind und so erscheint dieses Buch nicht in dem Deckmantel des Romans, sondern als das, was es ist -  eine saukomische Doku.
